The story of how The Godfather was made is as dramatic, operatic, and entertaining as the film itself. Over the years, many versions of various aspects of the movie’s fiery creation have been told—sometimes conflicting, but always compelling. Mark Seal sifts through the evidence, has extensive new conversations with director Francis Ford Coppola and several heretofore silent sources, and complements them with colorful interviews with key players including actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, and others to write “the definitive look at the making of an American classic” ( Library Journal , starred review). On top of the usual complications of filmmaking, the creators of The Godfather had to contend with the real-life members of its subject matter: the Mob. During production of the movie, location permits were inexplicably revoked, author Mario Puzo got into a public brawl with an irate Frank Sinatra, producer Al Ruddy’s car was found riddled with bullets, men with “connections” vied to be in the cast, and some were given film roles. As Seal notes, this is the tale of a “movie that revolutionized filmmaking, saved Paramount Pictures, minted a new generation of movie stars, made its struggling author Mario Puzo rich and famous, and sparked a war between two of the mightiest powers in America: the sharks of Hollywood and the highest echelons of the Mob.” “For fans of books about moviemaking, this is a definite must-read” ( Booklist ). REVIEW

I wasn't expecting it, but this book was captivating. I'm probably guilty of extending my lunch break by an hour or two because I didn't want to stop reading. I couldn't stop reading. I've seen the movie and I've listened to the novel (at the time I was recovering from corrective eye surgery) and so I know the story very well. But the making of The Godfather could be, dare I say, more compelling than the story itself. Is this typically how movies are made? I wouldn't know, but I suspect not. Mario Puzo was broke, lying in a gutter, deep in debt and going nowhere until fortune smiled upon him. His big-break novel, which he always imagined he would write, was a book about the mafia and it just so happened to be sold to Paramount Pictures, and his life would never be the same. Francis Ford Coppola reluctantly agreed to be the director, but only after his friend, George Lucas, told him to take it because their production company, American Zoetrope, was going to get shut down and so they needed the money. Coppola practically picked the entire cast himself at the beginning only to be told no by the studio heads, time after time. Wasted casting calls ensued and yet, in the end, Coppola got everyone he wanted. The Mob also wanted their say and they almost got the whole thing shut down, until a deal was made by producer Al Ruddy with boss Joseph Colombo where he agreed that the word "mafia" would not be used in the movie. A myriad of other fantastical things happened during the making of this movie and Mark Seal keeps you entertained the whole way through. I found some annoying mistakes, like words repeated in the text, but I was so enthralled with what I was reading that I didn't have the time to care. In the end, The Godfather changed the movie industry, and it left its audiences speechless. Like I said, I wasn't expecting it, to be spellbound by a book about a movie, but it was a delightful surprise. I highly recommend it.
